COSTA KOI COMPANY

The Costa Koi Company is a new arrival to Alhaurin el Grande. We are a family based set up comprising myself, my partner Martin, my brother John, and my sister in law Ola (good name for Spain eh).

The idea came to us last year whilst visiting John and Ola who lived in Mijas at the time. Nobody seemed to have a Koi pond – What is everybody missing. So – here we are along with over 200 1st class quality Japanese Koi.

We are a positive outgoing bunch that can supply just about anything a koi enthusiast needs, from design and build to any kit required.

Martin and I are very keen koi keepers and have kept koi as pets (don’t confuse koi with goldfish) for many years. Martin is the brains and a true fanatic. At last years all England show he was a finalist in the koi mastermind. He knew the answers but as he always thinks first he wasn’t quick enough – not the best way to win mastermind

Our gate is always open for people to come, look at our ponds and our fish, or to buy from our small shop. If we don’t have it we can get it but please ring first to make sure we are in.

Look forward to seeing you and meeting new friends

Keeping Koi - Whats it all about

Koi keeping can be like having an aquarium in your garden! Its lovely to sit by the side of your pond on a quiet day and watch the fish with the sound of running water.

Water has been used for centuries to provide a cool and relaxing environment. A good example is the Alhambra in Granada. There are a lot of strange myths about Koi keeping that are unfortunately due to insufficient knowledge about what is required. Are they difficult to keep?

Koi can be difficult to keep if they do not have the basic requirements to live. If they are provided with sufficient clean filtered water and oxygen, with enough room they will thrive.

Any animal even humans thrive better in a clean environment. The hobby has progressed in leaps and bounds over the past few years. Up until the advent of the plastic bag, fish could not even leave Japan! Now wonderful filters, drains at the bottom of the pond, air domes, and air pumps are available.

All these make it easier to keep Koi and result in fewer problems and less maintenance. The latest must have is probably a window! It seems any new raised Koi pond should have one. We have just added one to our main pond.

I have seen examples where the pond is attached to a conservatory wall with a window fitted, so that the conservatory has an aquarium attached. Many fish have personalities and will happily feed from your hand. With patience care and a reasonable pond Koi are fun and relaxing!
